The Importance of Electrolytes

What are Electrolytes?

Electrolytes are basically salts which are dissolved in water and have an electric charge. They are extremely important for maintaining a constant environment within the body which allows it to function optimally. They are particularly important for nerve function and muscle contraction.

Electrolytes found in the body include:

  • Sodium
  • Potassium
  • Chloride
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Phosphate

Sweating and loss of electrolytes…

When exercising at a high intensity or in hot temperatures the rate you sweat increases considerably. Through sweating you lose electrolytes which can result in an electrolyte imbalance. The main electrolytes lost in sweat include sodium and potassium. An imbalance caused by sweating can compromise performance as it can lead to the early onset of fatigue, muscle cramps or side stitches.

Replacing electrolytes and maintaining hydration

With the loss of electrolytes having a negative affect on performance it is important that they are replaced along with the water which is also lost though sweating. Here at Science Fitness we have just released a range of hydration tablets. The product is called HYDROSOURCE and contains a variety of electrolytes including sodium and potassium and is a great way of maintaining electrolyte levels and staying hydrated.
