Science Fitness Skipton Cycle Races - Press Release

Science Fitness Skipton Cycle Races prepare to zoom through the town on July 2

Cyclists are raring to go, a sponsor has been signed up and the route has been decided – Science Fitness Skipton Cycle Races are well on track to delight the town this summer.

A 970m circuit around the centre of Skipton has been designed for the new event – a fast and exciting course which should see riders attacking each other in a battle for victory.

The start and finish of the race will be on the High Street, in front of the Town Hall, setting off up towards the Castle – a visually stunning backdrop for a Criterium.

Barriers will be put up around the route between racers and spectators – making sure it’s safe for everyone while allowing the public to get up close to the action.

Riders will rocket past the Castle pub and turn fast left into Water Street with speeds as high as 30mph around the corner.

They will turn left down Coach Street, the fastest part of the circuit, and as they race over the hump back bridge and into the high walled narrow street the view will be spectacular.

Riders then have to hang on the brakes for a tight left at the bottom of Coach Street – on the final lap the first rider out of this corner might well be the winner as they sweep out of Swadford Street and up the High Street.

The biggest crowds will be here and riders love to impress so expect attacks and amazing speeds as the cyclists blast up the high street and across the finish line.

Councillor Richard Foster, Leader of Craven District Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Skipton to recapture the glory of the Tour de France with an exciting event attracting professional cyclists back to the town

“I’m sure the event will be a big hit with locals, cyclists and tourists – it’s bound to be a brilliant evening.”

A spokesman for Science Fitness, which is sponsoring the event, said: “Sponsoring the inaugural Skipton Cycle Races represents the perfect partnership for Science Fitness.

“As an exciting new brand of endurance and recovery nutrition based in Skipton, we are proud to support such a fantastic local event which further establishes Yorkshire as the UKs cycling heartland.

“With our quality, scientifically proven products and WADA-compliant formulations, this event, which brings professional and aspiring athletes to our home town, represents a brilliant opportunity to show what Science Fitness represents to the wider cycling community.”

Craven District Council has employed Velo29 to deliver the event on its behalf. Velo 29 has successfully organised town centre races in Stockton upon Tees and Bishop Auckland and Stockton has been selected for next year’s National Road Championships.

Councillor Chris Harbron, Leader of Skipton Town Council, said: “Town centre cycling events like this are becoming increasingly popular and it is a perfect way for Skipton to benefit from the legacy of Le Tour.

“We had a fantastic day last summer and I’m sure that this more concentrated burst of cycling action will prove a great success. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Andrew Mear, Chairman of Skipton Town Partnership said: “The Town Partnership is very happy to support Skipton Cycle Races, which is shaping up to be a fantastic event for Skipton.

“It will add to our reputation as a lively town where there’s always something interesting going on and enhance our profile as a great cycling destination. The extra visitors will be good for local business, which is at the heart of everything the Partnership does.”
